There was another silence from Yoshiro. “Perhaps we should speak of something else.”

I saw Kaji come out of the noodle shop and cross the street. I waved and he shouted that he’d left his phone in Miss Shiori’s office. “Sorry, Yoshi,” I said. “Go on.”

“Shall I call you later?”

“Mmm, right around bedtime would be nice.”

“I will set the alarm on my watch. Do you think you could arrange to be in the bathtub?”

“I’ll see what I can do. Goodbye for now.” I rang off as Sora, Michi, and Tsubasa came out of the tiny shop. “Ready, lads? Have a seat in the van, and I’ll fetch Kaji.” I figured he was talking with Shiori, but I heard him before I got to the studio area.

“As I said, it is a generous offer, but I cannot accept.”

“We could still work together.” Kazuki’s silk and sandpaper voice stopped me in my tracks.

“No, we could not,” Kaji said firmly.

Kazuki leaned toward Kaji and spoke so softly, I could barely make out the words. “I wish I could speak with you in private.”

“I have no wish to be alone with you. I don’t know you.”
